Las patologías respiratorias infecciosas de las vías bajas son más frecuentes y más graves que en la población general, tanto en los niños menores de 5 años como en los adultos con síndrome de Down de más de 40 años, y son una causa importante de hospitalización y mortalidad sea cual sea la edad. La especial vulnerabilidad de las personas con síndrome de Down se puso tristemente de manifiesto en la pandemia de COVID 19, que se cobró un elevado número de víctimas.
